Greg Francois of Collective Films pushes the boundaries of believability as a wakeboarder carves a masterpiece into the surface of a lake in Brother SA’s latest television campaign.
One does not generally associate office printers and fax machines with fast-paced wake-boarding stunts, but that is exactly what agency Black Khaki Advertising conceptualised for the first ever local commercial for Brother SA, manufacturer of high-end office equipment.
Greg translated Brother Internationals strategy of leaving a lasting impression, into an elegant yet edgy commercial, pushing the limits as to how close, above, around and even below he could get a 35mm camera to the action. These camera platforms included an inflatable mount towed at high speed (anxious moments for the grip who accompanied it!), and a chopper which raced literally a meter above and behind a somersaulting wake-boarder.
Shot at one of South Africa’s most breathtaking locations, the Theewaterskloof Dam near Franschhoek, the production team were blessed with the most glorious weather in a region that is known as wind alley. The mirrored surface allowed two of SA’s top wake-boarding pro’s, Andrew Bourne and Nick Burton-Moore to perform spectacular stunts equal to the best in the world.
“Greg’s treatment and attention to detail, and Collective Film’s unbridled enthusiasm and desire to produce this commercial, certainly matched ours,” says Trevor Delaney, CD of Black Khaki Advertising. “I clearly remember telling Greg that I was looking for mesmerising filmic beauty and he said “You’ll get it!”. Even watching the footage on the playback monitor during the shoot, I knew they had delivered on their promise. The quality, slickness, beauty and grandness of the production epitomises everything about the Brother brand.”
The end result is a commercial combining exquisite scenery and impressive stunts that all leave a lasting impression.
